Description: The students will get a tour of the office and learn about what goes on in the District Office. They will be able to meet all staffers and interns and get to hear their professional backgrounds. They will also get to see what projects the interns work on.

District Attorney's Office, Santa Clara County (70 West Hedding Street, West Wing, San Jose CA 95110)

Deputy District Attorney, Narcotics Unit: Trial attorney for general felony trial unit. Handle felony cases ranging from auto theft to assaults, stabbings, shootings, robberies, and 3-strike life cases. Work closely with law enforcement in these investigations. Prepare and argue written motions before the court and conduct jury trials.

Description: Receive a presentation on the function of a Deputy District Attorney and the new Community Prosecution Unit. A trip to Judge's chambers will allow students to interact with the judge. Observation of a preliminary hearing or trial is also likely. Bring a note pad and an open mind.

Description: On March 18, 2019, students will have an opportunity to observe court in session which will comprise of pretrial conferences in the morning, and arraignment hearings in the afternoon. Judge will explain the justice system and the roles of different individuals in the court.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Students will need to go through the metal detector at the entrance of the courthouse. Please plan on arriving 15 minutes early. Cell phones to be completely turned off in court and students should not have them out while court is in session. No cameras. During observation, students need to quietly observe, but the judge will take time on breaks to explain the process and answer questions. Parents and students should be advised that the subject matter is domestic violence and the content may be sensitive.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Students should be prepared that long lines in front can form going through metal detectors. They will need to go through this line. They can have phones, but should not bring separate cameras into the court. Cell phones to be completely turned off in court and students should not have them out in court. Office Administrator: Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP is a global law firm consisting of 20 offices and approximately 1200 lawyers around the world. Manages business functions as well as the overall operations of a law office and general responsibility for financial planning and controls, personnel administration, and systems and physical facilities.

Description: Students will shadow different members of a law firm: lawyer, paralegal, secretary and administrative support. They will shadow each position for approximately a half hour. They will also participate in a mock trial and will be asked to act as a witness, attorney and/or judge. Students will be participating in a mock trial and will be required to read the materials prior to their arrival so that they are fully prepared for the hands-on activity. Materials will be emailed in advance.
